Martyr Irene of Aquileia, commemoration date: April 29

She, along with her sisters Agapia and Chionia, lived at the end of the third century near the city of Aquileia in Italy. From an early age, the girls were left without parents. When they grew up, many suitors proposed marriage to them, but they rejected them because... in their hearts they had only love for God.

It was instilled in the sisters by priest Zinon. In a dream vision it was revealed to him that he would soon go to the Lord, and the holy virgins would be sent to torture. At the same time, Saint Anastasia the Pattern Maker received exactly the same revelation. After this, she went to the sisters and instructed them to endure all the torments. After some time, the priest Zinon died, and Agapia, Chionia and Irina were captured by the guards of Emperor Diocletian.

When the sisters were brought to him for trial, he invited them to forget their faith and renounce Christ. But the martyrs did not want to hear about it. Diocletian was going to Macedonia at that time and ordered that the holy virgins be taken with him so that their fate would be decided by the local ruler Dulcytius. Seeing the beauty of the sisters, he was inflamed with an unholy passion for them. He ordered them to be taken into custody and promised freedom if they fulfilled his wishes. But the martyrs refused. Then Dulcitius decided to secretly sneak into their dungeon at night, but before he could open the door, he was struck by an invisible force, after which he was deprived of his reason. On his way out, he accidentally walked into a bakery and got covered in soot. When he saw himself in the mirror, he decided that this was the result of the sisters' witchcraft.

Then Dulcytius decided to take revenge on them. The next day he ordered them to be brought to trial. But they had to appear before him naked. No matter how hard the warriors tried, they could not remove the clothes from the maidens.

Emperor Diocletian learned about this incident, he became furious and handed the holy sisters over to judge Sisinius. Starting the interrogation with his younger sister Irina, he forced her to renounce Christ, but she stood her ground. Then he proceeded to Chionia and Agapia. But they also stood firm in the faith. Sisinius ordered the two sisters to be burned and Saint Irene to be left behind. In the fire, Chionia and Agapia received the crown of martyrdom.

The next day Irina was brought to Sisinius. He told her that if she did not renounce, she would be sent to harlotry. But Irina replied that even if her body was subjected to violence, her soul would still be given to the Lord. When she was taken to a depraved house, the guards were overtaken by two bright young men. They said that Sisinius ordered Irina to be sent to the mountain and left there. That's what they did.

When the judge found out about this, he was furious, because he had not said anything like that and ordered to go after her. When a detachment of soldiers approached the mountain, they saw Saint Irene on it. They searched for a long time for an approach to the mountain, but never found it. Then one of the warriors shot at her with a bow. So the holy martyr departed to the Lord.

Great Martyr Irina

(MP3 file. Duration 4:29 min. Size 2.2 Mb) Read by Hieromonk Ignatius (Shestakov)
Saint Irene lived at the turn of the 3rd-4th centuries. She was the daughter of Licinius, king of the Magedonian region in Persia, and before her baptism she bore the name Penelope. The girl was unusually beautiful, so the king, wanting to protect her from the harmful influence of the outside world, locked six-year-old Penelope in a high, inaccessible tower. There she lived in unimaginable luxury and comfort. Thirteen maids served her. She was raised by a wise old man named Apelian.

Several years have passed. One day a girl saw a dove fly into the tower, holding an olive branch in its beak. The dove placed a branch on the golden table. Then an eagle flew in, holding a flower wreath in its talons, and laid it nearby. Finally, the disgusting black raven brought the snake. Penelope asked the teacher to explain the meaning of the signs. He revealed to her that she was being baptized, as evidenced by the olive branch, and that after many trials and tribulations she would win the royal crown of a martyr.

Soon after the vision, the Angel taught the girl the Christian faith and gave her the name Irina, which means “peace.” After baptism, Irina crushed her father's idols and courageously opposed his threats. In a rage, Licinius ordered to throw his daughter under the feet of wild horses. But one of the horses turned against the king and trampled him. Resurrected by the prayers of his daughter, Licinius converted to Christianity along with many of his subjects. He renounced the kingdom and retired to a tower, where he spent the rest of his life in tears of repentance.

His successor Zedekiah tried several times to return the princess to idolatry. But she stubbornly refused. Then he threw her into a ditch filled with snakes. By the will of God, Irina escaped this test as well as other tortures, and converted many pagans to the true faith.

Zedekiah's enemies overthrew him from the throne. To take revenge, his son Sapor went to war. But both he and his army were struck by blindness, and they had to stop. They met Irina outside the city, and the saint healed them all from bodily blindness. However, spiritual blindness remained, and Sapor and his entourage subjected her to new tortures: the young maiden was loaded with a sand bag, they pierced her legs with nails and forced her to walk almost five kilometers. As punishment for such an insult to the saint, the earth opened up before the army and swallowed up many infidels. Among those who survived, thirty thousand converted to Christianity. One king remained unshaken and for this he was punished by an Angel.

Being now free, Irina went around the city of Mageddon preaching the Good News and attracted many townspeople to Christ. She then went to the city of Kallinikos (in Northern Mesopotamia, on the banks of the Euphrates, also known as Raqqa), where she overcame all the tortures to which she was subjected. She converted the entire population to faith, including the prefect, whom the king instructed to torture her.

Glory to St. Irene reached the Persian king Sapor. He summoned her and beheaded her. But the Angel brought Irina back to life so that she could complete her mission. She went to the city of Mesemvria, holding an olive branch in her hand as a sign of the victory of faith over the power of death. Having baptized the king of that land, St. Irina returned to her homeland, then moved to Ephesus, where, in support of her preaching, she performed miracles worthy of the apostles.

Having completed her missionary work, the saint, accompanied by teacher Apelian and six disciples, headed to the dug grave. Having entered there, she ordered the gravestone to be closed and to return for it only after four days. Two days later, Apelian came there and found a fallen slab and an empty grave[1].

Irina Day: who is Irina of Egypt

Irene of Egypt was a Christian martyr whose name was Penelope before her baptism. She was originally a pagan. The girl grew up unusually beautiful. To protect her from the evil eye, her father locked her in a high tower, where one day a dove, an eagle and a raven flew into their beaks with different gifts: an olive branch, a flower wreath and a snake. Penelope's teacher Apelian revealed the encrypted meaning of the message: the girl will be baptized, undergo many trials and win the royal crown of a martyr.

When Penelope was 12 years old, her father Licinius wanted to marry her off. However, the girl decided to refuse her chosen one, and instead be baptized with the name Irina. The father got angry and wanted to punish his daughter by throwing her under the hooves of wild horses, but they did not touch her. One horse rushed at his father and trampled him. His daughter’s prayers resurrected him, he believed in God and renounced the kingdom, spending the rest of his days in repentance.

History of Irina Day

On this day, the name day was established in honor of the martyr Irene of Egypt. Before baptism, the martyr's name was Penelope. She was originally a pagan.

Penelope was incredibly beautiful. The father, in order to protect her from the evil eye, locked his daughter in a tower, into which one day a dove, an eagle and a raven flew into their beaks. They had an olive branch, a flower wreath and a snake in their beaks. Penelope's teacher Apelian saw the gifts. Having deciphered them, he stated that when the girl grows up, she will be baptized and go through many tests, winning the royal crown of a martyr.

And so it happened. When Penelope was 12 years old, her father decided to marry her off. The girl refused the marriage, saying that she wanted to be baptized under the name Irina. The angry man threw her under the hooves of wild horses, but they did not touch her. Instead, one of the horses rushed at the father and trampled him. The girl began to pray over her dead father and he was resurrected. Later the girl was baptized. The rulers of Egypt constantly tortured her in the hope of forcing her to renounce her Christian faith. But all the time, various miracles happened: either the snakes did not touch the girl, then the water in the mill suddenly ran out, when Irina was tied to the wheel, then the saws with which they wanted to cut her became dull.

Irina died in the city of Ephesus, having previously predicted her death. Shortly before her death, the woman went to a cave, the entrance to which she ordered to be blocked with stones. When they came for the body, they did not find it.

In Istanbul, a cathedral was built in honor of St. Irene, which has remained in its original form to this day.

In the icon, the holy martyr Irene of Egypt is depicted as a girl in a red robe. She holds a cross in her right hand, and holds her left hand to her chest.
