I have five universal rules for life. They were the result of the bitter experience of the first underwater dive, which could have been the last. I learned to apply these rules everywhere: at work and at home, under water and on land, with close friends and strangers. They work.

Diving came into my life unexpectedly. My best friend called: “What are your plans for May? We are going on a diving safari, one place has become available. Do you want to come with us?
I had very vague ideas about diving. But desire is a great force. Three days later I came to the first, introductory lecture on diving training. I told the coach about my goal: the safari starts in a month. He did not share my enthusiasm. Safari - a story for advanced divers. But I agreed to take it on the condition: if another trainer, a practical instructor, approves of me. Three days of theory, then practice in a deep-sea pool. With the wording “Let’s take it, she loves water and is not afraid of anything!” I was taken to an accelerated training course. This is how my diving story began.
A month later, at the airport, before flying to Hurghada, I recalled the final words of the instructor: “We didn’t go through open water with you. Diving in the Moscow region in April, you would almost certainly catch a cold. And then there’s no safari – you won’t be able to clear your nose with a runny nose.” I rode without practical experience in open water. Only lectures and a swimming pool. It's scary. But there is no turning back. We're flying.
Our diving safari starts, we go for seven days into the open sea. Dives four times a day. Like breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus nightly.
Our first dive was to a sunken ship. Depth 18 meters. Everything was going well. The dive was coming to an end when the guide gathered us up and asked a question about the amount of air. My pressure gauge read 70 bar. OK. Enough to float up safely. While the group was getting ready, I swam around and looked at the ship again. And she prepared to swim towards the guide. I felt confident and proud. What a great guy I am. The gaze fell on the pressure gauge. The pressure gauge showed 0. Zero, can you imagine?
When you're a beginner, you don't understand how your breathing rate affects your air flow. It seems to you that you are breathing calmly. In fact, the first dives are stressful. And you're worried. Rule #1. I don’t rush to conclusions until I have studied the situation, the person, the information carefully and thoroughly. I give myself time to adapt and analyze. A new team, a fresh business idea, or an unusual way to relieve stress. I look closely, test, try. So as not to be disappointed later in hasty assessments, actions and opinions.
I got a mustachioed guy from Ufa as my buddy partner. He was very cool. He demonstrated his experience and achievements to everyone. I didn’t pay attention to how he was equipped, as I was busy getting ready and checking the equipment myself.
After I saw zero on the pressure gauge, I rushed to the buddy like a dazed person. I show with a sign that I have no air! According to the rules, your partner must give you a spare regulator - an octopus. My experienced handsome man does just that: he hands it to me. I throw my regulator aside, reach for air. I take it, inhale... But there is no air! He shows: one more time! I breathe in again. No air! You understand that this happens while holding your breath. I look up. I understand that the depth is serious - I will not emerge painlessly. And somewhere there is the sun. And air. In a split second, my life became incredibly dear to me!
Already on the bot, when we dealt with the situation, it turned out that the octopus was faulty. This experienced person simply did not check it. This is why it is so important to check not only your equipment, but also your partner.
Rule No. 2. I am attentive to the person who is “floating” next to me at this particular moment. A loved one, business partner, child, friend, etc. I assess his resources and emotional equipment. I try to help and encourage if they need it. I also let you know if my “equipment” is acting up. I admit that it’s hard, scary or just tired. People around you sometimes have no idea about your condition. Feedback helps support each other in difficult times.
During theoretical classes, special attention is paid to maintaining calm. "Don't panic." It's easy to say. When your tank is 0, the depth is 18 meters, and your buddy’s octopus is not working, it is difficult to maintain universal calm. I closed my eyes and prepared for the worst. At this time, my mustachioed partner grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and dragged me to the nearest swimmer. This guy saved my life because his octopus was working properly and I finally took a breath. I surfaced together with my savior, using his oxygen reserves.
My close friend, an avid diver, shared this secret with me. If you panic, close your eyes and take 2-3 breaths. Moreover, panic under water can take hold for absolutely no reason. In this case, it is especially useful to come to your senses by closing your eyes. To focus on.
Rule No. 3. When I get out of balance, I close my eyes and take a few deep breaths. Helps not to yell at the child, not to cry in despair, and to cope with anxiety.
After such an extreme immersion, I could not speak or communicate for another thirty minutes. I just sat quietly in the corner and came to my senses. Dashka, our guide, came up and told me: “the next dive is in three hours. You should go for it. If you don’t go today, you’ll never go.” I went. It was very scary. It seemed that the state of helplessness and horror would now repeat itself. But it turned out that the second time was not so. You take the next step and gain new experience. New impressions open up and fear goes away. On the second dive, I finally saw fish and appreciated the beauty of the underwater world.
Rule #4. If I encounter difficulties, misunderstanding, refusal, and my goal is important to me, I take the next step towards it. As a rule, after overcoming yourself, a reward awaits you - new experiences, impressions, emotions. And pride for not giving up.
From the moment when I looked up from the depths at the breaking rays of the sun and I could not breathe, I have not relaxed under water for a minute. No matter how beautiful the corals are, no matter how amazing the living creatures are swimming around. Many people value diving precisely for the opportunity to relax underwater and enjoy the silence. But while you are a beginner, you need to carefully monitor the equipment and carefully follow the instructions.
Rule #5. I try not to relax on the path to success. Small achievements are a reason to praise yourself, but not to relax. Moreover, success is never complete. The more we achieve in life, the higher the bar we set for ourselves.
Upon arrival in Moscow, my teacher told me that I was among the lucky 2% of beginners who, in such a situation, retain their sanity and do not rush to the top. The realization of how great the risk was shocked me. And it changed. Then these rules were born. Like insurance against accidents and an unhappy life.
