Only in the second half of the 20th century, a mineralogist identified a separate classification for rhodolite and assigned it to the garnet family.

In ancient Greek mythology, the origin of the gem is associated with the charming nymph Rhoda, the daughter of the patron of the seas, Poseidon. The young beauty and the sun god Helios fell in love with each other. The time that they had to spend apart, when the Sun God went to heaven, was difficult for Rhoda and she shed crystal clear pink tears on the Earth. This is how deposits of the mineral garnet rhodolite appeared.
