Amethyst is the most expensive and beautiful variety of quartz and is a precious stone. It is considered a symbol of sensual love and sincerity, as well as purity, humility and love for the world.

Origin story

The mineral received its name thanks to the amazing legend about the beautiful nymph Amethyst, for whom the god of wine Dionysus was inflamed with passion, but the girl was in love with a handsome young man named Sprykos, which greatly angered the immortal, and he decided to take the charming beauty by force.

The young woman hurried for help to her patron goddess Artemis, who turned her into a shining purple stone. To revive his beloved, Dionysus poured wine on the stone, which gave it a delicate purple hue.

This stone has been known since ancient times. The mineral was valued in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, where signets, gems and other small ornaments were made from it.

In the Middle Ages, everyone who was elevated to the rank of cardinal was given an amethyst ring.

Amethyst was considered a biblical stone endowed with extraordinary power, so it was popular with high church leaders, who considered amethyst a symbol of spirituality, humility and purity.

The mineral is still used to frame church utensils and is worn by clergy.

The stone was also valued in Asia, where it was used to make exquisite boxes and bottles for aromatic oils.

Purple quartz became widely used in Europe in the 18th century, where it was used to make magnificent jewelry - rings, bracelets, earrings, brooches, beads, etc.

Description of the mineral and its significance

The unusual rich purple hue of amethyst fascinates and captivates. The stone is valued by jewelers all over the world for its unique color and magnificent appearance.

Products with minerals are becoming increasingly popular.

Amethyst crystals grow on a gray quartz substrate. They are elongated in shape, with a pyramid at the end, which has the brightest color.

Found in rock crystal veins and sedimentary rocks. The properties and color of amethyst depend on the deposit and the intensity of light.

Place of extraction

Significant deposits of stone are concentrated in Russia, Asia, Africa (one of the largest deposits is in Zimbabwe), and South America. The richest vein is being developed in Austria.

The Ural stones are recognized as the most beautiful and expensive. Amethyst from a deep deposit is called “deep Siberian”.

Blue amethyst

However, most Russian deposits are not developed, mothballed or abandoned.

Physical properties

The physical properties of the stone, which is a type of quartz, are largely similar to its properties. The chemical formula of the mineral is SiO2 (silicon oxide).

Raw Amethyst

Amethyst has a pyramidal or prismatic structure of solid crystals (7 on the Mohs scale) with a glassy luster, which are translucent or transparent with inclusions of impurities of elements such as manganese, cobalt, iron.

Crystal density – 2.63 – 2.65.

In nature, amethyst crystals are found singly or in the form of amethyst brushes or druses, which combine thousands of small or medium-sized crystals, and grow to large sizes very rarely.

Many collectors pay a lot of money for druzes of impressive size.

Coloring

The most mysterious and unique property of amethyst is its magnificent delicate color, the origin of which is explained in different ways.

Some believe that it is due to manganese impurities for such a magnificent color, others claim that the rich color is obtained due to the content of divalent iron in the crystal, and still others blame it on flaws in the structure of the crystal lattice.

Its color can vary from pale pink to pinkish-red and from soft lilac to dark purple, almost black.

In nature there are stones of rare colors - green, which is popular with jewelers, also blue and pink, which are more related to quartz, but black amethyst is a real treasure!

In intense sunlight, gems lose color saturation over time - about 20% in 10 years with constant wear.

Violet

Purple is the most beautiful and mysterious, which emanates mysticism and other worlds. Such gems are most valued by jewelers. Various amulets, talismans and amulets are made from them.

Under natural conditions, purple color ranges from light lilac to dark shade.

When exposed to high temperatures (over 250°C), the color of amethyst fades and turns from violet to pale yellow and faded green, but if you place the gem under X-ray radiation, the color will be restored.

Green

A rare variety, green amethyst is luxurious and unique, but it is rarely used in jewelry.

It is used to make collectible one-off jewelry, which is original and piquant also due to the fact that this type of quartz contains needle-like inclusions, however, it is precisely because of them that the price of such a stone is low.

Pink

An extremely rare stone, but it is more likely not amethyst, but quartz.

From rose quartz mined in the deposits of Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais, such an amazing gem as lavender amethyst is created using gamma irradiation.

Pink amethyst is so beautiful that it requires an expensive and valuable setting. It must be stored very carefully, since in bright light the mineral loses its pure and delicate color.

Black

This stone is a real treasure. Created by nature itself over many millions of years, it is worthy only of the best cut and the most expensive frame.

However, the black gem is not very valued by jewelers; it is most in demand among magicians and sorcerers, who consider it a magical amulet that protects against evil spirits and the forces of darkness, and is used as a talisman during spiritualistic séances and other magical rituals.

It is also believed that such a stone can open the “third eye”.

How to distinguish an original from a fake

Amethyst is a beautiful and valuable variety of quartz, so it is actively counterfeited by those who want to profit from inexperienced buyers. Ordinary glass, plastic, and stones of lower cost, such as fluorite, are used.

Amethyst is also synthesized. Such specimens cannot be called fake, but they are synthetic and do not possess the unique magical and healing abilities of natural gems. Although artificial amethysts are much cheaper and are suitable for absolutely everyone, if the main goal pursued by the buyer is aesthetics.

A gem certificate will first help determine the authenticity of amethysts. It states the origin, the place of extraction, and other important information. If the seller does not have it, then you can safely consider the presented stone to be a fake.

You can distinguish synthetics from natural amethyst by the following characteristics:

  1. The color is too bright and uniform.
  2. The ideality of the structure, which is visible through a magnifying glass. In natural specimens, some defects are always found - air bubbles, cracks, inclusions, and so on.
  3. High transparency is inherent only in artificial stones. Natural stones will be non-uniformly translucent.
  4. Change of shade along the edges when immersed in water. For natural gems, the edges will become noticeably lighter after some time in water. Synthetic ones do not have this property.
  5. Consistency of shade in light and shadow. The color of natural amethysts is always the same, regardless of the intensity of light. Artificial stones look different.
  6. In synthetic specimens, with a general homogeneity of structure, crystal growth lines are visible when viewed through a magnifying glass.

It is even easier to distinguish glass or plastic from a real gem. Firstly, these materials are soft and easily scratched by a needle. Amethysts are hard and will easily scratch glass or plastic. Secondly, imitations quickly heat up in the hand, while minerals remain cool for a long time. Thirdly, fakes weigh much less than gems. Comparing the weight of stone and glass will help identify deception.
