Belomorite is an unusual stone that is credited with many magical properties. In appearance, it looks a bit like a combination of pearls and moonstone.
This mineral can be classified as feldspar. It is a type of oligoclase, also called sunstone. Belomorite has a unique iridescent effect, that is, a shimmer of color. The main color of the mineral is white-gray, with a slight reflection in violet and blue-blue tones.
Despite the fact that the hardness of belomorite is 6 units on the Mohs scale, the mineral is fragile and difficult to process. When cut, it breaks down into small particles similar to bread crumbs. The stone has a pearlescent luster and absolute opacity.
What is
Belomorite is a type of oligoclase mineral from the feldspar family.
The range of transparency is from full to zero. There are cloudy or translucent specimens.
More often the surface is milky white with a bluish-pearl tint. They find greenish, white with reddish, achromatic stones.

Field
Belomorite is of igneous origin; rock samples are found in granites, as well as in mica-bearing, ceramic, and granite pegmatites. The stone often coexists with tourmaline, orthoclase and quartz. As a rule, the lunar mineral forms columnar, prismatic and tabular aggregates.
The most famous deposits of belomorite are located in Karelia and the Kola Peninsula. On the territory of Russia, rock deposits were also discovered in Buryatia and the Urals. In addition, deposits of these gems have been discovered in the USA, Australia, India and Tanzania.
The stone is mined on an industrial scale in Sri Lanka.
Origin
The mysteriously shimmering gem is accompanied by a legendary and documented history.
Documented history
The time, place and “parent” of belomorite for our civilization are known exactly:
- 1925;
- White Sea coast;
- guru of Soviet mineralogy, academician Alexander Evgenievich Fersman.
If it were not for Fersman’s worldwide authority, love of mineralogy and creative gift, the stone would have remained in science only as one of the varieties of the mineral oligoclase. Belomorite is this, but in the classification it is highlighted in a separate line, and under the name proposed by the Soviet mineralogist.
Fersman described belomorite in such a way that no one in the world was left in doubt: it is an independent mineral.
Legends
The indigenous peoples who inhabited the Russian North have known about belomorite for thousands of years:
- According to legend, the stone was used as a magical artifact by the Hyperboreans, a people of wizards.
- A beautiful legend has been created about the origin of the mineral. Only a stone that had lain in a certain place and absorbed the light of the full moon a thousand times could become magical.
- The one to whom the stone “appeared” became a seer.
Fans of the mineral belomorite claim that on it, like any moonstone, a white spot appears on it during the new moon. It increases as the Moon's disk grows, reaching its maximum at the full moon.
How to recognize an imitation
Glass, plastic, and artificial mineral are offered under the guise of belomorite. It is often confused with other "lunar" varieties.
Glass, plastic
A natural gem can be distinguished by its properties:
- The surface is painted unevenly, with a clear transition of colors into each other.
- The stone is heavier, cold, and heats up slowly in your hands.
- Difficult to scratch.
Belomorite is easy to identify thanks to adularescence. This optical effect appears as a bluish shimmer coming from the depths of the stone. It is created thanks to a thin-layer structure, which thus reflects light.
Fake diamond
Synthetic imitation differs from natural stone:
- Its iridescence looks screamingly bright.
- The shine is the same from any angle.
Natural belomorite shines blue at an angle of about 15° and never at a straight line.
Other lunar minerals
Belomorite is mistaken for other types of moonstone - selenite, labradorite, adularia.
There are several differences from moonstone:
- Selenite and labradorite are more transparent.
- Selenite shimmers blue in the light.
- Labradorite is endowed with a blue-green-yellowish iridescence.
- The colors of the adularia are white, yellowish.
Belomorite is characterized by a “sugar” iridescence.
Zodiac signs
Belomorites are especially suitable for water signs. Cancers, Scorpios and Pisces, wearing amulets with this gem, will be able to better understand the feelings of other people, their needs and desires.
Belomorite is completely unsuitable in terms of energy for Leo and Sagittarius.
Other signs should take a closer look at the stone and try to find contact with the stone. If there is one, then the stone will sparkle in your hands.
Where is it used?
The only practical area of application for belomorite is jewelry:
- Cabochon inserts are made from it for pendants, pendants, earrings, and rings.
- White gold, nickel silver, cupronickel, and silver are used as frames.

Master stone cutters do not work with the stone due to its fragility.
Collectors are interested in belomorite as an essential component of the “lunar” mosaic of minerals.
Jewelry and talismans
Belomorite stone is quite fragile and soft. It crumbles easily and flakes a lot, so creating any intricate figures from it is almost impossible.
Most often, belomorite is used to make pendants in the shape of a drop or a ring with a treated inner surface. It looks great in a light metal frame. You can also purchase a small ball of this stone as a talisman, which is easy to take with you. This option is especially suitable for men who are unlikely to dare to wear jewelry made from this mineral.
As a talisman, belomorite will be very useful for scientists whose activities are related to the study of the past: archaeologists, history teachers, etc. The stone will also help schoolchildren and students who have chosen history as their main subject. Belomorite jewelry in the form of beads, bracelets, pendants or rosaries is worth having for teachers and educators who work with children, as well as for people whose profession is related to creativity: musicians, poets, writers, etc.
How to care
Belomorite is not very hard and fragile, so you should care for it carefully:
- Select a separate durable box or section in the box for storage.
- Protect from falls, scratches, and mechanical impact.
- Clean with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. Do not delay the procedure.
If the stone is used as a magical or healing artifact, it is recharged by exposing it to the light of the growing or full Moon.
How to wear
The delicate range and small dimensions of the inserts make the stone universal:
- Jewelry with belomorite can be worn in sets.
- They are appropriate in the office, at a status event, or on a date.
- The accessory will suit any wardrobe color.
- The iridescence of the inserts is especially expressive under artificial lighting. Therefore, at an evening event, any product looks even more magnificent.
You need to be prepared for the fact that iridescent stones (especially in a pendant or earrings) will attract the attention of others.
Application area
Not to say that belomorite is widely used in jewelry, but most often in this area. The stone is very fragile and does not lend itself to experiments with shape, grinding and polishing. Therefore, the decorations are quite simple, but this does not reduce their merits.
In the ornamental sphere, belomorite is of slightly less importance, although crafts in the form of, for example, a solid ball are in demand among collectors and esotericists.
