History and origin
Despite the centuries-old history of the mineral, no one knows exactly the meaning of its name. Most scientists are inclined to believe that the name “malachite” comes from the ancient Greek language, meaning the name of a plant with bright green leaves - mallow. Officially, the term “malachite” was introduced into mineralogy in 1747 by a Swedish scientist.
The most ancient places of mineral extraction reach an age of six thousand years, being the same age as the ancient Egyptian nation. The gem played a significant role in the formation of Kemet, an ancient state.
But the fact is that the original purpose of the stone was not the art of creating crafts or jewelry - malachite served as a source of copper, which was used by ancient peoples (Greeks, Hittites, Philistines, Egyptians) to make tools. The gem served this purpose for a long time, until the end of the Bronze Age.
When describing the appearance of malachite, one cannot limit oneself to one or two epithets. The magical greenery of this stone is mesmerizing. The charming color is complemented by an unusual pattern on the cut of the mineral, which consists of circles, ovals, “pupils”, ribbons and stripes of different shades of green, alternating with each other. Sometimes the appearance of the stone resembles velor or velvet - the surface of malachite seems so soft.
The Middle Ages finally made it possible to reveal the wonderful properties of the mineral, which ensure ease of processing and the creation of amazingly beautiful things. Humanity has found more convenient means of extracting copper, and European deposits of the stone have been depleted. Then malachite became attractive to craftsmen, who at that time already had access to making mosaic plates from the mineral.
The mineral has acquired special significance for Russia. Residents of the country who loved books learned about the extraordinary beauty of malachite from Pavel Bazhov’s fairy tale “The Malachite Box”.
Do you know that the Demidov family brought fame to malachite outside the country. Since the 30s of the 19th century, thanks to the Demidovs (a family of the richest Russian entrepreneurs (breeders and landowners) and French craftsmen, gemstones began to be used in architecture as a facing material. And in 1851, the World Exhibition was held in London, at which A.N. Demidov presented to the world a collection of products from his own malachite factory.
In one of the mansions in St. Petersburg, the architect O. Montferrand created the first malachite hall commissioned by P.N. Demidova. Almost at the same time, for Emperor Nicholas I, A. Bryullov decorated the malachite living room in the Winter Palace. The technique used to create these masterpieces was called “Russian mosaic”. This term was first used in the reports of the London World's Fair.
Today, visitors to the Hermitage are given the opportunity to appreciate the importance of the gem in national history. Tourists can see the entire Malachite Hall with more than 200 pieces of stone products. And the altar of St. Isaac's Cathedral is decorated with malachite columns.
So, for two centuries, the gem was revered as a symbol of a powerful state and one of the special treasures of the Ural Mountains, despite the extraction of other, more valuable minerals. Russian emperors of the 18th-19th centuries decorated their chambers with malachite, and presented decorative souvenirs made of stone as gifts to monarchs of other states.
How malachite is formed and its history
It is not known exactly where the name “malachite” came from. Some scientists believe that it comes from the word “mallow”, the leaves of which resemble a gem. Others believe that from the Greek word "malakos", it translates as "soft".
This gem has been known to man since ancient times. The oldest deposits in Africa are more than 6 thousand years old. At that time, the rock was used not for creating beautiful crafts, but for extracting copper, from which tools were made.
- In Ancient Egypt, malachite was treated with great respect. It was considered a symbol of Hathor - the goddess of beauty, fertility and family well-being.
- In Russia, the famous book “The Malachite Box” brought fame to the gem.
There is an interesting fact about malachite. The owner of the malachite factory and wealthy businessman Demidov brought fame to this stone all over the world. He began to use the mineral for finishing work and making interior items.
One of the halls in the Winter Palace and the altar in St. Isaac's Cathedral are decorated with malachite. All the nobility loved to decorate their estates with this mineral. Now the whole world admires the masterpieces of architecture. They are made using Russian mosaic technique.
The Hermitage has a huge collection of malachite items. The most famous specimen is a vase made of gemstones.
Natural turquoise paint was made from small, low-quality minerals. Roofs and facades of buildings were painted with it.
Place of Birth
Historically, the mineral was mined in Central and North Africa. The age of the first deposits is estimated at six thousand years. The African continent still holds its position today. The main supplier of malachite to the world market is Congo, a large democratic republic in equatorial Africa.
In addition to Africans, the county of Cornwall in the UK, Kazakhstan, Germany and France can boast of gem deposits. The main Russian mines of the Urals are currently exhausted. There is only one left - the Korovinsko-Reshetnikovskoye field. Small reserves remained in Altai.
Mining zones
Physicochemical characteristics make this stone a frequent companion of copper ores, native copper and its other formations - for example, chalcopyrite, azurite, goethite. An important circumstance: the rock must be of hydrothermal origin, that is, hot underground springs must take part in its formation.
The main deposits of Russian malachite, located in the Ural Mountains, have now been completely depleted. Except for one thing - Korovinsko-Reshetnikovsky. There are small deposits in Altai.
Among other countries, Kazakhstan, Great Britain (County of Cornwall), France and Germany can boast of malachite mining zones. But the main supplier of this gem to the world market is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a large state in Equatorial Africa.
Physical properties
The characteristic green color of malachite is given by copper, the part of which in the composition of the mineral reaches 57%. Additional shades are given by an admixture of iron. The stone is easily scratched and damaged, dissolves in acids, releasing carbon dioxide. Despite its low hardness, malachite has good viscosity, which makes the stone an excellent raw material for processing.

The mineral composition is similar to malachite. Often they grow together and represent monolithic original specimens.
They are used for the manufacture of decorative items in a single copy, which are especially highly valued.
Malachite + other rocks
After joining, crystals are obtained, which include several gems:
Calcite – malachite
It is a mixture consisting of gypsum, malachite and calcite.
Azurmalachite
One of the most popular combinations, characterized by an interesting greenish-blue tint. Both elements grow together to form one crystal.
Star malachite
Chalcedony is interspersed with round-shaped malachite spots.
Agate – malachite
The latter is expressed by spots of a greenish tone and looks beautiful in the overall structure of jasper.
Eilat stone
A combination of 3 minerals: malachite, chrysocolla and azurite. The stone has a dark, rich green color with bluish inclusions.
Lapis - malachite
This is a duet of quartz and malachite.
Mysoreen
An original gem combining malachite, chrysocolla and calcite.
There is also pressed malachite, which is obtained artificially: small pieces are combined into a single stone using technologies that use high pressure.

Color varieties
The color of any variety of malachite is green. The specimens differ from each other in shades and patterns. Based on this, the mineral is divided into the following types:
- Finely patterned. A rare variety of mineral, which was especially valued in the Urals. A cut of a stone represents a pattern in the form of birch leaves. It is interesting that it was this type of mineral that became the inspiration of Pavel Bazhov.
- Velvet (or plush). This species is difficult to process, as it has a fine-grained structure. And the texture of the mineral resembles suede, velor or velvet, which is what gave the stone its name.
- Turquoise (or pseudomalachite). In fact, it is copper phosphate, a stone of a different origin, not related to malachite. However, the texture of the mineral is similar to malachite, endowed with a turquoise tint and increased hardness.
As for patterning and color saturation, samples of the mineral differ from each other depending on the place of extraction. Thus, African stones are brighter in color than Ural stones, and the rings and circles of the pattern are larger and have a regular shape. “Ural green” has a slightly different pattern - the pattern consists of contrasting stripes that separate light and dark shades of green.
Origin and location
Malachite is formed exclusively in oxidation zones of copper sulfide deposits, especially if they occur in limestones, or if the primary ores contain a lot of carbonates. It is the most common copper mineral in oxidized copper ores. It develops both by replacing carbonates and by filling voids with the formation of typical spherulitic forms in them. Since a clearly alkaline environment is created in solutions near the surface of limestones or carbonates of Ca and Mg, the solutions of copper sulfates that reach them obviously undergo hydrolysis, reacting with bicarbonate solutions.
In addition, copper carbonates can probably also arise as a result of the slow reaction of copper sulfate or hydrate with a solution saturated with atmospheric carbon dioxide. Malachite often forms pseudomorphs on azurite, cuprite, native copper, and sometimes also on minerals such as atacamite, calcite, chalcopyrite, etc. Malachite in the form of inclusions or “copper green” impurities is very often found in oxidation zones of copper deposits. However, large accumulations, especially of ornamental varieties, are now becoming rare.
Malachite (often together with azurite) is a typical prospecting mineral when searching for primary copper ores.
Medicinal properties
Malachite is famous for its wide range of effects on various diseases of the human body. Modern folk healers know several directions in which the healing power of the stone extends.
This is interesting! According to an ancient legend, once upon a time in Egypt, during the era of the Old Kingdom, a cholera epidemic raged. Only the slaves who worked in the malachite mines did not succumb to the disease. Since then, upper-class Egyptians have worn malachite bracelets, highly revering the healing power of the stone.
Lithotherapy is known for a number of diseases that can be treated with malachite:
- Bronchial asthma. When wearing malachite jewelry on the chest, attacks of the disease are softened and their number decreases. Help also comes for other lung diseases.
- Skin diseases. Powder from the mineral is sprinkled on areas of the skin affected by allergic rashes - this eliminates redness, itching, and promotes the healing of allergy foci.
- Eye diseases. Earrings with malachite help improve vision, normalize eye pressure, and improve the functioning of the optic nerve.
- Neurological abnormalities. The interior of the house is filled with crafts made from malachite - the color of the stone has a calming effect on the psyche, normalizes the functioning of the nervous system, eliminating the symptoms of the disease.
- Rheumatism. For treatment, healers used malachite plates, applying them to diseased areas. This procedure helped reduce heaviness and pain in problem areas.
- Absent-mindedness, lack of concentration. Any object made of malachite placed on the desktop will help to cope with this problem.
- Pressure. Malachite lowers blood pressure, therefore it is strictly contraindicated for hypotensive patients. But for hypertensive patients this is a kind of life preserver.
- Strengthening hair. Hairpins and combs made of stone will help strengthen hair follicles, improve hair structure, and accelerate hair growth.
Some healers are inclined to believe that malachite slows down the spread of metastases in cancer. To do this, you need to regularly carry a large gem with you.
It is worth noting that the healing capabilities of a light, very bright stone are stronger. And if you set such a mineral in copper, then its healing power will increase significantly.
Magic properties
Since ancient times, sorcerers and magicians have actively used stone in rituals. Malachite is an energy stone, strong and has great natural strength.

Therefore, travelers wandering through the forest thickets took this gem with them. It was believed that the nugget protected a person from predators, arrows of savages, and helped to find the right path among animal paths.
The stone also has a dangerous side. Wearing it for a long time is not recommended, since the mineral awakens the natural animal nature in a person - intuition begins to prevail over logic, instant muscle reaction overshadows prudence and thinking, self-control gives way to free expression of feelings.
In addition, mediums believe that the danger of malachite for women is expressed in the ability of the gem to attract men. At the same time, there is no division of people into good or bad - the mineral attracts suitors of any kind to the owner.
This is fraught with the fact that the young lady may end up in the hands of a not very decent man. You can protect yourself from this by wearing jewelry in a silver frame - this metal will help protect a woman from aggression, neutralizing the negative desires of men. In addition, silver enhances all the magical abilities of the mineral.
In the modern world, malachite acts as an assistant to speakers, artists, and all motivated individuals who want to achieve success. The stone makes such people more confident and eloquent. Businessmen can also enlist the help of a nugget by placing a malachite souvenir on their desk. Such a thing will attract good luck in business, directing success towards business development.
This is interesting! One of the ancient legends says that malachite is able to warn its owner of danger. Signaling trouble, the mineral breaks into small pieces.
The gem bestows inspiration and new ideas on creative people, becoming a friend to poets, artists, and sculptors. This amazing mineral helps get rid of fears, calm your thoughts and soul, and relieve stress. By removing all blockages, the gem helps you find new ways to achieve your goals.

Why do you dream about malachite?
According to the dream book, malachite dreams both of protection and well-being, and of serious problems:
- a broken gem warns of the death of a loved one or a serious illness;
- a mineral box speaks of the favor and protection of an influential person;
- malachite jewelry portends a pleasant surprise;
- buying a malachite product predicts a meeting with an unpleasant person.
Compatibility with other minerals
Malachite is not picky about its proximity and is “friends” with almost any gems, in addition to minerals of the fire element - Diamond, Ruby, Pyrope. The best neighbors for malachite will be:
- Jet;
- Jasper;
- Bull's and Hawk's Eye;
- Jade;
- Chalcedony;

Jewelry with stone
Malachite is considered an ornamental stone, so its price is low - approximately $5 per gram. The stone is used for cladding decorative items; larger samples are used to make carved souvenirs, amulets, and crafts.
Beads of various shapes and sizes are made to create jewelry. So, you can purchase handmade products from different craftsmen. Or buy jewelry at affordable prices in online stores:
- Earrings start at 500–600 rubles.
- The bracelet can be purchased for 800–2000 rubles.
- Beads are a little more expensive, the price depends on the size of the beads and the length of the product - the average price is 5,000 rubles.
In some stores you can purchase a set of jewelry - a ring and earrings. The cost of such a set starts from 2 thousand rubles. If you want to make your own jewelry, for example, beads, then the price of a set of beads will be 2 times lower than the price of the finished product - about 1500-2000 rubles.
Physical and chemical properties of malachite
Before this mineral began to be used to make various crafts and jewelry, malachite was the main source of copper, as it is a hydrated carbonate of this metal.
The color range of malachite is represented by all shades of green: from pale light green to almost black. This mineral can be dissolved in acid. When placed in ammonia, the latter acquires a beautiful blue tint. Malachite can have either a glassy or matte luster.

How to distinguish a fake?
Russian malachite deposits have practically dried up, which has given way to the promotion of synthetic counterfeits to the market. There are several options for making a fake:
- Small particles of the mineral are cemented using hardeners.
- Powder is sintered from a natural nugget.
- The gem is obtained by hydrothermal synthesis.
The last method is to copy the natural conditions for the formation of malachite. Such a mineral differs little from a real nugget. A counterfeit can only be determined using chemical analysis. If plastic imitation is used in the decoration, then you can distinguish the copy by its weight - the natural mineral is much heavier.
How to distinguish natural malachite from artificial
Malachite is an inexpensive stone, so it is rarely counterfeited. Some scammers still sell glass and plastic imitations instead of natural crystals.
How to distinguish natural stone from imitation malachite:
- To distinguish glass from natural stone, just touch it to your cheek. The natural mineral will remain cold, but the fake will heat up.
- If you run a needle or glass over malachite, a scratch will remain.
- The stripes on the stone should not be exactly the same. Absolute symmetry of the pattern is typical for fakes.
In addition to crude fakes, there are more professional imitations of natural gems. They are divided into 2 types:
- Pressed. Such stones are made artificially by pressing malachite chips.
- Synthetic. In the laboratory, conditions are created in which a natural mineral is formed. Artificially grown stones cannot be distinguished from the original without special equipment.
On the counters there are stones similar to malachite. They can be distinguished by their characteristic pattern.
How to wear and care for it correctly?
Malachite is the stone of spring, the beginning of flowering, the beginning of the very life of nature. Therefore, it is best to purchase malachite jewelry in spring or summer, no later than August, then the mineral will be most magically powerful. If you buy a gem in autumn or winter, it will not carry vitality, but the energy of withering.
Wearing jewelry does not require compliance with any special rules. Beads and bracelets are worn as you please, but rings are worn only on the middle finger of the left hand or on the little finger. As for the requirements for the image, here you need to be guided exclusively by the general rules of color combinations. Do not forget about the compatibility of stones with each other when choosing jewelry to pair with malachite.
Important! If malachite is used for medicinal purposes, the stone must be “cleaned” after each use. To do this, you need to place the mineral in the ground overnight, or in a flower pot. The next morning the stone will be suitable for the next use. Do not forget also to change the soil used for cleansing once every lunar month.
Remember to be careful and careful when using it, because malachite is a fragile stone. The mineral does not tolerate shocks or sudden temperature changes; it is easy to scratch or leave chips on the surface. A soft cloth and a light soap solution will do for cleaning. It is also worth protecting the gem from exposure to acids and household chemicals.
Interaction with substances
Scientists chemists do not use the name “malachite” in professional discussions. For them it is copper carbonate.
The chemical formula of malachite shows the interaction of copper with other elements. Its connection with oxygen is reflected. That is, the stone contains copper not in its pure form, but as an oxide.
The low hardness of malachite indicates that the stone is fragile. When interacting with any, even very weak acids, it is destroyed. Interaction with ammonia leads to a color change, the mineral turns red. The ammonia itself turns blue.
When heated, malachite turns black and releases carbon dioxide. This feature is used in metallurgy. Malachite ore is melted, and after its complete combustion, copper is formed. However, given that the reserves of the stone, which is in demand in jewelry, are depleted, this method is not economically profitable.
Compatibility with names and zodiac signs
Malachite patronizes people whose names are:
- Anastasia. Trusting by nature, Nastya will gain wisdom. The talisman will direct internal energy in the right direction, awakening ingenuity and hard work. Malachite will become a talisman of love and friendship, will remove obstacles along the path of life, and will help Anastasia fulfill her cherished desires.
- Denis. Malachite has been useful to Denis since early childhood. Boys with this name are prone to anxiety and unreasonable fears. The malachite amulet will protect such a child from diseases and dangers, and will make his sleep restful. As an adult, Denis in love will gain charm and charm using the amulet.
In addition to compatibility by name, it is also necessary to take into account the zodiac tandem.
(“+++” – the stone fits perfectly, “+” – can be worn, “-” – is strictly contraindicated):

Astrologers classify malachite as a mineral of the earth element. The patron of the gem is Saturn. The mineral has a positive attitude towards all signs of the zodiac circle, not counting Virgo, Cancer and Scorpio. The personal qualities of people born under these signs are incompatible with the nature of the nugget. For each of the other constellations, malachite plays its own role:
- Libra will become more charming and attractive, and will gain eloquence.
- Aries will become more restrained, suppressing impulsiveness and stubbornness.
- Taurus will gain a clear understanding of reality, ceasing to look everywhere and in everything for the reasons for failure.
