History of the amulet.

Images of Valknut were found on ritual objects, rune stones, many of which date back to the first century AD. Most often it could be seen on funeral urns, so some researchers believe that it was a funerary symbol.

The Valknut sign consists of three intertwined triangles. This could mean the path of a warrior whose life was divided into three main periods: first he was an ordinary person, then he became a warrior, and after death he would become one who would join Odin's feast.

Scientists are still not exactly sure of the very name of this sign or its true purpose.

Valknut still remains the most mysterious symbol left to us by the Vikings.

What did the Valknut represent among the Slavs and Scandinavians?

In Slavic beliefs, Valknut meant the connection between all worlds and the possibility of transition between them. He is able to unite the past, present and future, soul and body. It was one of the most powerful and mysterious amulets, which could give the keys to all the secrets of the universe.

For the Scandinavians, Valknut was, first of all, a sign of the main god - Odin. The image of Valknut - three closed triangles - means the undivided power of Odin over the past, present and future of humanity. The Scandinavians called this sign the Knot of the Slain, because with its help Odin controlled the transition of souls from one world to another.

Magical properties.

The magical properties of the amulet are given by the numbers that were considered sacred by the Scandinavians - three and nine. The symbol shows three triangles; if you count all their angles, you get nine.

These two numbers are not random; they are more common than others in Scandinavian myths: nine worlds divided into three attas, three holes that weave human destiny, three forms of Odin, nine branches of the world tree, etc.

Anyone who owns a Valknut receives a piece of wisdom from all nine worlds that the Vikings believed in to exist.

How does it help?

If we talk not about global significance, but about how the Valknut symbol can help an ordinary person, then, first of all, it is self-knowledge. He can develop intuition or even bestow clairvoyance.

The amulet develops memory, attention, logic. Protects from ill-wishers. Often, before it begins to act, Valknut tests the owner by sending him tests. If you endure them with honor, you can count on unprecedented success.

What does Valknut mean in the runic circle?

Very often this Scandinavian symbol is depicted inside a circle on which runic symbols are applied. This was not done by chance: this combination helps strengthen the properties of the talisman and direct them in the right direction. Each rune depicted in a circle enhances the accumulation of wisdom, helps to move forward and develop.

The runes depicted can be combined into certain combinations. Each of them is dedicated to one of the nine worlds. The Valknut can be positioned in any of eight ways inside the circle so that the corners of its triangles point to the desired worlds.

Valknut: meaning, origin, etymology

The Valknut symbol is one of the few sacred signs of the northern tradition that has survived to this day in its original form. And although we do not know the exact meaning of the symbol, numerous archaeological artifacts with its images have been preserved. The Valknut symbol can be found on the Töngelgord and Osebereg rune stones. Valknut is also depicted on the famous Stura Hammar rune stone. Strictly speaking, these images do not have any explanatory inscriptions, but the scenes in which the Valknut symbol is present shed light on the probable interpretation of the sign.

Traditionally, “valknut” is translated as “knot of the fallen”, since, in all likelihood, the name of the symbol was formed by combining two words - “valr” (which means “fallen” or “dead,” the word “valhalla” has the same root basis) and “knut” (translated from Old Norse as “knot”). The Valknut symbol in this sense is invariably correlated with the fallen warriors and their patron - Odin, the supreme god of the ancient Scandinavians. At the same time, we often see Valknut on runic stones that depict a “bloody raven”, a traditional Scandinavian execution, which to a certain extent is a kind of sacrifice to Odin (of course, only in its figurative aspect). An example is the already mentioned Stura Hammar stone.

Valknut, the meaning of which is lost in the mists of time, is clearly connected with the afterlife; it probably acts as a link between two worlds - the world of the living and the world of the dead. In this sense, his connection with Odin, ritual executions and funeral rites is obvious. At the same time, the Valknut symbol could presumably be applied to weapons and armor, and also act as a ritual tattoo. But we must clearly understand that today we do not have a single archaeological or documentary source that could confirm this. That is why the Valknut symbol is difficult to identify and understand what the ancient Scandinavians put into this sacred image.

The Valknut, whose meaning is probably based on the features of its design, is sometimes called the "Heart of Hrungnir". In general, Valknut is a modern term. Well, relatively modern, that is, it appeared at least in the XIV-XV centuries. In the Younger Edda, Snorri Sturluson cites the myth of Thor’s battle with the outstanding warrior, the giant Hrungnir, who had a magical impenetrable shield and an interesting weapon - a sharpener. This song says that Hrungnir had a “glorious heart” with three sharp corners, and in the likeness of this heart the runic sign of the same name is cut. Valknut has sharp corners, traditionally it is classified as a runic or near-runic symbol, so the definition of “Heart of Hrungnir” looks quite logical. But, again, this is just a version.

Meanings of amulets.

Valknut is suitable for personal use by both men and women. The only restriction is not to put the amulet on children. Too powerful magical energy of the sign can negatively affect the child’s psyche.

For men.

The talisman will help men gain wisdom and endurance. But you need to be willing to go through trials in order to receive the reward. Therefore, before choosing this amulet, you should think - it can break the weak in spirit.

Initially, this sign belonged to warriors - therefore it will endow the owner with determination, courage, courage. Good luck and prosperity await those who pass the test. Or maybe even mysterious knowledge about the nine worlds contained within Valknut.

For women.

Women should be careful when choosing this amulet. Taking a risk and carrying it with you can only be recommended to those representatives of the fair sex who have a courageous and decisive character, more like a man’s than a woman’s.

Appearance (varieties) and meaning of the sign in our time

Visually, the knot of the fallen resembles 3 interconnected triangles. However, the order of attachment and the general appearance of the symbol are somewhat different. There are three common options:

  • Similar to Borromeo's Rings. In this form, the Valknut consists of three separate triangles that intersect with each other. All elements are located at different levels: the left figure is at the very top, the right one is slightly lowered, the middle one is in the lower position. It is considered the most common version of the symbol, known since ancient times.
  • Similar to Trefoil rings. This type assumes a single object, in which the line is repeatedly curved, forming figures like a triangle, but has a common beginning and end. In fact, this is a non-trivial node. Two peaks are at the top, at the general level, and one more is at the bottom. Also one of the most common options.
  • Chain . Not used on ancient objects. These are 3 separate triangles interlocked with each other.

Due to the fact that the historical meaning has not been established precisely, modern esotericists, when determining it, proceed from where exactly the sign was found and what attributes were nearby. According to these data, we can distinguish the following tasks that Valknut is able to perform:

  1. Removes the evil eye, damage, slander.
  2. Promotes development, both physical and spiritual.
  3. Eliminates fears and internal restrictions.
  4. Develops intuition.
  5. Reveals the secrets of existence.
  6. gives energy recharge.
  7. Establishes a connection with the otherworldly.
  8. Sends tests, trains the will, which leads to self-improvement.

Ring.

A ring with the sign of Valknut is a good gift for a man. It will help find a way out of difficult situations and increase the authority of the owner in the eyes of others. Sometimes, to enhance the magical qualities of the ring, runes are depicted on it. They give the symbol a new, additional meaning:

Odal . This rune symbolizes the family hearth - a place where a person always feels calm and comfortable. The action of the Odal rune is aimed at strengthening marital relationships and quickly achieving the intended goals. Another meaning of the rune is preserving traditions, respect for ancestors, establishing harmony between soul and body.

Dagaz . The rune can radically change a person’s life. This is a double symbol: it means new life, movement towards the light, but on the other hand, before this the owner faces obstacles and troubles that must be overcome. Only after going through a difficult path can one achieve enlightenment and awareness. Runa Dagaz helps to achieve what you want, to shape the future exactly as the owner would like to see it.

Isa . Promotes spiritual development. Finding inner harmony will help the owner to look correctly at the world and the events happening around him. The Isa rune helps a person to organize his life and put things in order. Another meaning of the rune is cold, freezing. Therefore, thanks to its influence, it is possible to “freeze” and stop negative processes, including diseases.

Nautiz . The meaning of this rune is perceived by many as negative - it means difficult circumstances, overcoming difficulties. But in combination with the Valknut symbol, it takes on a different meaning and helps to overcome the most difficult obstacles, gain wisdom, experience, and self-confidence.

Hagalaz . The rune means destruction. However, in this case, only outdated, unnecessary circumstances that prevent us from moving forward will be destroyed. After all the remnants of the past are eliminated from the life of the owner, he will discover new possibilities in himself.

Ansuz . This rune will give the owner creative inspiration and spiritual development. She, like the sign of Valknut, is associated with the supreme god himself - Odin. A ring with such a symbol can reveal to the owner the secrets of the universe and help in magical rituals.

Laguz . This sign represents forward movement. It will give you enormous vitality, mental strength, and the opportunity to achieve any goals. Laguz can develop intuition and the gift of clairvoyance.

Walking like a tattoo - acceptable or not?

In conclusion, it is worth mentioning how it is customary to “use” Valknut today. Tattoos with this sign are popular, but in reality this is not the smartest step, because, as we have just seen, the true meaning of this symbol is unknown to us. However, queries like “Valknut tattoo” are increasingly popping up in search engines, which can only upset a reasonable person. After all, it is stupid to think that the ancient Scandinavians used such signs without any esoteric background, and there is no direct evidence that Valknut is a protective symbol.

Valknut (which today is not at all difficult to buy in the form of a pendant or an image on a ring) could be a talisman, certainly could be a military sign, could be a symbol of the power and protection of the gods. But, firstly, all these are just probabilities, and is it appropriate to “play roulette” in this case? And secondly, who said that a person who gets a “Valknut” tattoo is worthy of wearing this sign? After all, the ring from Nin was gold and belonged to at least a jarl. Of course, the modern world is very different from the early Middle Ages. Today no one can stop me from getting a “Valknut” tattoo. Buying a bracelet with this symbol or a spectacular (even platinum!) “amulet” is also quite simple, if only you have the finances. But, as the ancient wisdom says: you have to pay for everything. And it’s not about money anymore...

Features of use.

Before using the amulet, you need to study at least a little of its history and Scandinavian mythology. Without ancient knowledge, it is unlikely to be of any use.

The symbol is not suitable for people who are dishonest, dishonest, weak, or ignorant.

The amulet should be a purely personal thing - you cannot give it to anyone, even just hold it.

You should take the amulet very seriously - it is a powerful sign that does not tolerate frivolity.

The talisman is suitable for strong-willed people who are ready to overcome obstacles and life's hardships on the path to happiness and success.

Description of varieties

There are 2 types of the Valknut symbol. The first is three triangles intertwined and form a single whole, the second is a continuous broken line.

In the first version, the triangles seem to intersect with each other, in the second they are intertwined.

At first glance, these varieties of valknut are very similar, but upon closer examination they are quite different from each other.

The meaning in the first and second cases will also be different. The interrupted triangles are a symbol of Odin, the patron saint of fallen warriors. The second option is the interweaving of the threads of fate, which was mentioned above.

The first sign symbolizes the absolute power of Odin, who is capable of both breaking the chains that hinder the development of a person and confusing his paths and thoughts and leading him off the right course.

The second outline speaks of the close connection between the past, present and future and reminds us that one is inseparable from the other.

Types of Valknut images

There are two types of images:

  • three triangles of the same size are intertwined;
  • triangles are made with one broken line.

In tattoo designs, this symbol is most often black. Other dark tones are used less often. The size and style of the image is chosen by the customer.

In a classic tattoo design, the meaning of the image is primarily pursued. A simple graphic drawing is quite suitable for this.

Increasingly, customers prefer originality and some artistic appeal. In the photos in tattoo parlors you can see three-dimensional Valknut patterns, color shading inside the triangles, as well as Celtic script in addition to the main design.

The meaning of the valknut as a symbol

The literal meaning of the term “valrknut” is “knot of fallen (warriors).”

Warriors killed on the battlefield were sent to Valhalla (in Scandinavian mythology, a huge hall with a ceiling of gilded shields and walls of spears.

This building is located in Asgard - the heavenly city where the gods live). Valhalla is ruled by the supreme god Odin.

And since the valknut was applied mainly when sending warriors “to meet Odin,” this sign began to be identified with this deity.

The symbolism of the “valknut” sign is revealed in the following theses:

  • the meaning of valknut is the unification of the world of people (Midgard), gods (Asgard) and the dead (Helheim);
  • the meaning of valknut is associated with the world tree (ash) Yggdrassil, which covers all 9 worlds, is also associated with Odin, who was hanged on this tree for 9 days in order to comprehend the meaning of the runes. This connection is manifested through 9 angles (there are 3 triangles in the valknut, each of which has 3 angles);
  • the meaning of the symbol is also associated with the 3 goddesses of fate - Urd (“past”), Verdandi (“present”) and Skuld (“future”), since 3 triangles are connected in it.

Summarizing all the above interpretations, we can derive the meaning of the “knot of the fallen” - the connection between worlds and times.

That is why, with the help of this symbol, people tried (and are trying) to comprehend hidden knowledge.

The sign is also used in magical rituals. For “ordinary” people (not associated with magic and secret teachings), the valknut in its meaning symbolizes the unity of spirit, soul and body.

The use of such a talisman allows you to harmonize your life. However, the valknut amulet is not suitable for all life situations and not all people.

ATTENTION! It should still be remembered that the meaning of the “knot of the fallen” is historically strongly associated with the predetermination of the imminent death of the one who bears this sign.

Valknut as a sign of Odin

Some studies claim that Valknut is a symbol of Odin.
Of course, there is some truth in this, however, not a single historical source confirms this. Moreover, not a single fresco or runestone depicting Odin contains this symbol, and vice versa. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Valknut symbolizes the threads of fate, which predict the death of even the supreme god of the Vikings, which means that these images should not be combined again. Certain studies share images of Valknut. The one that consists of one line intertwined into three triangles is considered a symbol of fate. Three norns essentially spin one thread, which is divided into inextricably linked past, present and future.

Valknut, created from three closed triangles, denotes the power of Odin over the invisible chains of this world. This applies to both magical and martial arts. One can confuse the signs, or bind the heart with fear. Or, on the contrary, break the shackles that hinder development, cut through doubts and give the opportunity to move on.

The meaning of valknut as the unity of worlds

The meaning of the valknut is usually interpreted as a symbol of the unity of the three worlds - gods, people and the dead.

Accordingly, these are Asgard, Midgard and Helheim. The combination of all the above-mentioned worlds gives enormous power that promotes knowledge.

This function is used by magicians and clairvoyants to open the way to hidden knowledge.

It is believed that specific interaction with this magical symbol (for example, meditation) provides energy for personal transformation, rethinking reality and the structure of the universe, which is not revealed under ordinary conditions.

Walknut in a runic circle

At times, the symbol depicted on jewelry is complemented by runic signs. This variation is considered unconventional, believing that it arose much later than the original, closer to modern times. This attitude caused further disputes between experts and led to the fact that many pagans consider Valknut to be completely incompatible with runes.

The Valknut symbol is sometimes supplemented with runic signs.

However, Valknut in a runic circle can become a powerful amulet. It all depends on what signs complement it and what their meaning together is. If the entire runic row is enclosed in a circle, this will not bring any benefit. After all, instead of a spell, you will receive a simple list of runes in order. To enhance the meaning of sacred triangles, you need to compose a special runic spell with meaning.

The correct combination to help enhance the impact of the talisman is a cyclic image of four runes: Fehu, Uruz, Turisaz and Dagaz.

The meaning of this combination is as follows:

  • Fehu. The meaning of this rune is knowledge of the inner Self and the World, a state of readiness to receive new knowledge.
  • Uruz symbolizes vital energy, the driving force of everything and everyone, giving strength for ordinary life and creativity.
  • The meaning of the Thurisaz rune is the path. It helps you move forward, overcoming obstacles that arise on the way to your goal.
  • Dagaz is fraught with circularity, the beginning and end, the completion of any cycle and its obligatory transition to a new stage.

Valknut Numeric Symbolism

Numbers play a very important role in all pagan religions. Numerical symbolism, accordingly, is also inherent in Scandinavian paganism.

The numbers reflected in the image of the “knot of the fallen” are 3 and 9. They have their own sacred meaning. 9 is the number of worlds in Norse mythology:

  1. The world of the gods or Asgard.
  2. The world of people or Midgard.
  3. The world of the dead or Helheim.
  4. The World of the Vanir or Vanaheim.
  5. World of Giants or Jotunheim.
  6. The world of light elves or Alfheim.
  7. The World of Fire Giants or Muspelheim.
  8. World of Frost Giants or Niflheim.
  9. World of Dwarfs or Svartalfheim.

Also 9 is the number of branches of the world ash tree of Yggdrasil (one for each world). 9 branches are the basis of the runes of the elder alphabet (futhark). 3 is the number of norns (goddesses of fate), reflecting the present, past and future.

Runic interpretation

Modern runologists often use the Valknut surrounded by Scandinavian runes, as they believe that the symbol in combination with them acquires even greater magical power. However, this was not always the case.

In Viking times, the symbol was never depicted surrounded by runes; moreover, it has nothing to do with them and is completely independent.

According to runologists, Valknut enhances the effect of the runes to which the corners of the triangles are directed. For this reason, the sign is used as part of various runic formulas created for various purposes. The most effective combination is considered to be the combination of a symbol with runes:

  • uruz;
  • dagaz;
  • tusisaz;
  • fehu.

In a runic circle, a valknut will not be useful - this is what most experts think, since such a combination has no meaning or direction.

Who chooses the Valknut tattoo and why?

The history and mystical meaning of this symbol looks very attractive. The image itself attracts the gaze of many. The symbol conceals the unity of worlds and times, this gives it special power. You need to accept such a powerful sign into your life with great caution.

The Valknut tattoo is often chosen by people who are interested in mysticism and ancient knowledge. Those who seek to understand the laws of existence, who are concerned about the topic of death and the processes associated with it, stop at this sign.

Sometimes people in this way demonstrate their love for Scandinavian mythology and involvement in something special.
