Tektites are glassy formations frozen after cooling, which arose after the collision of meteorite bodies with the solid surface of our planet. But tektites and meteorites are not the same thing. Tektite stone may look similar to a black shard of volcanic origin, but has a much higher mass.

History of tektite

The term tektite is of Greek origin and goes back to the word "tektos", which translates as "molten". This name was proposed by Eduard Suess at the beginning of the 20th century. He studied stones discovered in the Czech Republic and concluded that they were a subspecies of meteorites. A few decades later, L. J. Spencer proposed that tektite was “impact glass” that was formed during the melting of rock on the surface of the planet. The samples Spencer studied came from meteorite craters located in Australia and Saudi Arabia. Another researcher, W. E. Barnes, called tektite a subspecies of fulgurite, formed by lightning strikes. There was also a hypothesis by Russian scientists, according to which tektites are of extraterrestrial origin and come from the material of comets.

Today, the accepted version of the origin of tektite is the collision of a meteorite with the earth’s crust and subsequent melting of the rock.

Tektite and its varieties are known as bottle stones, Darwin or desert glass, false peridots, australites, moldavites, indomalazinites, bediasites, impactites, agni-mani.

Place of Birth

No state in the world can boast of being the sole owner of a tektite deposit. They are found in various regions and countries:

  • in Australia;
  • on the Indonesian Peninsula;
  • in Malaysia;
  • on the island of Java;
  • in the west of the African continent;
  • in USA;
  • in Eurasia;
  • and in Tasmania.

On the Eurasian continent, tektite is mined in the Carpathian region (in the basin of the Moldau River, now the Vltava, flowing in Southern Bohemia), in Germany and Kazakhstan. It is in the steppes of this eastern country that there is a huge field of tektites with a meteorite crater in the middle.

Since tektite was formed as a result of a meteorite impact, it can be detected by characteristic marks on the earth’s surface. It is around them that deposits of this mineral are formed. Also, small reserves of tektites can be found in the bottom sediments of large reservoirs; these samples are tiny, no more than 2 mm, melted balls.

Physicochemical characteristics of tektite

The chemical composition of tektite is close to terrestrial igneous sedimentary rock, the mineral contains a high percentage of silicon dioxide (from 68 to 82%).
There is very little water in the stone - only 0.0005-0.001%. This parameter makes tektites unique and distinguishes them from other stones. — Advertising —

Tektite formation occurs during high-energy pulsed heating followed by rapid cooling. On some specimens, traces of the influence of a high-speed gas flow are noticeable. The age of tektite is usually in the range of 0.6-35 million years.

The shapes of tektite samples are varied: fragmentary, flanged button, dumbbell, boat, teardrop, hollow thin-walled ball, core, disk and plate, arrow, pear, bean and trilobite. There are complex, sculpture-like stones with a striated and indented surface. The weight is usually tens of grams, but in general it is in the range of 0.065-1 kg, the maximum recorded was 3.2 kg.

Externally, tektite resembles a porous black stone of volcanic origin, but it is distinguished by its high specific gravity.

Signs, origin, description

A powerful collision of a celestial body with the earth's surface can melt everything in the area of the epicenter at significant temperatures. Although the glassy rocks in question belong only to our planet. The falling “messengers of the universe” themselves are different in their components. Moreover, science finds it difficult to provide an analogy for comparison. It is believed that the first appearance of the mineral dates back to 35 million years ago.

The visual similarity of tektite to obsidian reveals differences in the chemical composition. Sometimes the stone is compared to earthly magma. After all, education proceeds in a similar way, including the pressing process. Geological surveys have discovered deposits all over the planet. It has quite a few names: false chrysolite, desert glass, bediazite and others.

The name of the stone was finally chosen in 1900 by a German geologist named E. Suess. In this case, a derivative was used from the ancient Greek τηκτος, which means “melted”. At first it was believed that the frozen stone rose from the planetary depths with high temperatures, since for a long time the origin was not understood. But this version was replaced by another, concerning the contact of the meteor with the surface. Energy was released and turned into heat capable of melting. Tektos (Greek term) are more often found near craters.

Magic properties of tektite

In magical circles, tektite is considered a special stone.
Its properties are considered unique due to the combination of four elements at once - wind (meteorite flight), fire (impact), earth (surface) and water. For its owner, such a stone becomes a powerful protective amulet that brings good luck. It also protects against erroneous actions that are committed on emotions, and gives wisdom. Residents of Australia called tektite a “heavenly talisman” and believed that it helped to establish contact with past events and travel to the astral worlds. Buddhists used tektite to solve problems with karma, and in Ancient Egypt the mineral was used in rituals. The main particle, located in the heart area, from Tutankhamun's pectoral was made in the form of a tektite scarab.

Tektite is considered a source and conductor of cosmic energy for humans. It helps to establish balance during any changes in life, promotes creative activity, and is valued by scientists, magicians and mediums. The mineral helps in spiritual improvement and self-development.

Talismans and amulets

People of the last century attributed magical properties to tektite and used it in ritual ceremonies. With the help of the stone it was possible to cause rain, to carry out treatment or a burial ceremony.

The mineral helps suspicious people get rid of various fears. Modern magicians use tektite to open the path to the astral plane. Mediums believe that tektites are capable of:

  • improve karma;
  • help to better understand the nature of the world around us;
  • avoid serious mistakes when making decisions;
  • remove the evil eye and get rid of damage.

Amulets with tektite are worn by practicing magicians. Talismans with this stone are made in the form of rosaries, bracelets and pendants.

Jewelry with this stone helps control emotions, brings good luck, calms excessive passion and cleanses karma. Tektite also helps normalize the emotional background and causes prophetic dreams.

For creative people, the mineral promotes the discovery and further development of talents. It protects businessmen from rash actions and allows them to feel deception.

Healing properties of tektite

Since ancient times, legends have been known about the unusual properties of tektite: the stone has always been widely used in folk medicine.
For example, it was used as a means to reduce the adverse effects of stress and overexertion. Tektite activates energy potential and reduces fatigue. It becomes a source of concentration and reflection, helps to get rid of various fears. For these reasons, the mineral has always been popular among Eastern healers. Tektite improves metabolic processes in the body, normalizes blood circulation and high blood pressure, and reduces headaches. For all these healing properties to manifest themselves, constant tactile contact with the mineral is necessary. But if it is excessive, then congestion may occur in the gallbladder.

In addition, tektite has found application as a prophylactic agent in the treatment of eye diseases; it effectively helps with colds and the consequences of hypothermia.

Lithotherapists point out the positive effects of tektite on the human nervous system, its ability to restore full, healthy sleep, and reduce the negative consequences of stressful situations and nervous breakdowns.

Stone care

If you become the happy owner of such a talisman, then you need to take care of its proper storage. Despite its hardness, it should not be kept together with other precious stones. It is best to purchase an individual box with soft upholstery for it. If the mineral becomes dusty, you need to wipe it with a cloth or rinse it under warm running water, but without using cleaning agents.

There is no need to especially protect Tektite from direct sunlight or strong humidity. They cannot negatively affect his condition and unique abilities. You can even expose the stone to the rays of the sun or moonlight for a while so that it is fed with their energy.

Interesting facts about tektite

  • Despite the fact that tektite is one of the most studied minerals in the world, it still remains the most mysterious. Scientists have been arguing for two centuries about the place of its formation: is it space or our planet? Proponents of the earth hypothesis argue that tektite is a frozen drop of melt that was formed when a comet or asteroid fell onto the surface of the Earth. The extraterrestrial theory of the origin of these stones is supported by the so-called “age paradox”: the age of tektites sometimes significantly exceeds the age of the horizon of their occurrence.
  • Tektite is a practically anhydrous mineral; it contains only about 0.0005% water, which is a unique property.

Zodiac signs

According to astrologers, tektite jewelry must be worn by Aries and Cancer, since it has the most beneficial effect on people born under these signs. Since Aries belong to the element of fire, the stone will allow them to control themselves and find solutions in difficult moments of life. “Space glass”, once melted and frozen into solid rock, will help you maintain composure in any, even the most acute, situation.

Tektite has the opposite effect on Cancers: the “fiery” stone pushes them to be active during bouts of indecision, making them more creative and sociable.

The stone is categorically not suitable for Sagittarius and Leo, since their natural intuition, well developed by nature, can be disrupted by the energy of indoshinite. For the rest of the zodiac signs, tektite is a neutral stone and is not capable of bringing any tangible benefit or harm.

Tektite is one of the most mysterious minerals on the planet; interest in it has not waned for many thousands of years. And no wonder: it allows you to touch the unknown secrets of the depths of space!

Pallasite - a piece of meteorite

Pallasite is, unlike tectonites, a stony-iron type of meteorite. They have a very beautiful color, “unearthly” in texture.

An alloy of metal (iron 80-90% and nickel 3-20%) and stone (transparent silicate). It was first found in 1749 near the city of Krasnoyarsk and later described by the scientist Pallas as native iron. There is quite a lot of pallasite in the world; pieces of it are found in almost every country. It is in high demand in the jewelry world because after processing it becomes very beautiful. Pallasites, unique in appearance and size, can cost up to several thousand dollars per gram.
