Uvarovite: the magical properties of the stone, to whom it suits according to their zodiac sign

Historical information

The first deposit of the mineral was discovered in 1822 in the Urals in the Bisertsky mine. The characteristics and properties of uvarovite were studied by the President of the Academy of Sciences, Count S.S. Uvarov, who served at the court of Catherine II. It was in his honor that the mineral was named. The Empress appreciated the beauty of the gem, which became the main stone for all the nobles of that time.

Uvarovite is called the Ural emerald for its grassy green color. Other names for the stone are also known: chromium garnet, trautwinite and hanleite. A distinctive feature of the mineral is its 2-3 mm crystals, forming fine-grained brushes.

A lot of time has passed since uvarovite was first discovered, but the stone is still popular both in European countries and in Russia.

History and origin

A new type of garnet was discovered in 1832 in the Saranovskoye deposit in the Urals. Chemist Hermann Hess compiled a detailed description of the stone and named it in honor of Count Sergei Uvarov.

Empress Catherine herself, godmother of Uvarov, who later headed the Academy of Sciences, paid special attention to this stone. She considered the uvarovite to be one of the best jewels. That is why the gem began to be called imperial. The crystal is also called Ural emerald or chromium garnet.

Abroad, the stone is known as trautvinite.

Fishing

For the first time, the stone was found only in two Russian deposits. One of them is Saranovskoye, which to this day remains the main place of mineral extraction. The miners found the stone and did not know that they had stumbled upon a valuable specimen of the gem. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, mines were opened in several regions of Russia:

  • Yakutia;
  • Chelyabinsk;
  • Sverdlovsk;
  • Irkutsk.

Somewhat later, uvarovite mining began in other countries:

  • Finland;
  • Norway;
  • Canada;
  • USA;
  • SOUTH AFRICA;
  • Turkey;
  • Himalayas;
  • Pyrenees;
  • Alps.

Despite the prevalence of the stone throughout the world, Russian specimens are beyond competition. They are mined both for domestic use and for export. Gems from the Urals are the largest, most transparent and brightest in color.

Artificial production of uvarovite

It was synthesized by heating a mixture of CaO, Cr2O3 and SiO2 at a pressure of 1 atm and a temperature of 855° for 150 hours, at 1200° for 100 hours; at 1490° it decomposes into pseudowollastonite and Cr2O3. The optimal temperature for the formation of uvarovite is 1365-1370°. Obtained from a mixture of oxides at a temperature of 660° and a pressure of 110 for 525 hours. Also formed from a mixture of wollastonite, Cr(OH)3 and CrCl3 at 900° and a pressure of 20,000 atm. Synthesized in a solution containing CaCl2 from a mixture of Ca(OH)2, Cr2O3 and SiO2 in appropriate proportions at 385-400° and a pressure of about 1500 atm. Under hydrothermal conditions, solid solutions of Ca3Cr2(SiO4)3 with CagFe2(SiO4)3 and Ca3Al2(SiO4)3 were obtained, in the latter case always together with (Cr, Al)2O3 and α-CaSiO3. Obtained in silicate systems with appropriate components.

physical characteristics

Like all representatives of the garnet group, uvarovite is a quartz silicate. The rich green color of the stone is given by the presence of chromium in its structure. Dark shades appear due to iron impurities. Some minerals contain titanium, which gives uvarovite a yellowish or rusty tint.

Physical properties of the mineral:

  • hardness on the Mohs scale - 6.5-7;
  • density -3.4-3.8 g/cm3;
  • system - cubic;
  • fracture - uneven to semi-conchoidal;
  • cleavage - absent;
  • luster - glassy;
  • transparency - transparent or translucent.

What does Uvarovite look like?
The main feature of Uvarovite is its resistance to high temperatures and acids.

Types of cuts

Green garnet stones are quite rare specimens.

They are usually designed in the form of flat cabochons. To increase transparency, the middle is sanded down significantly.

Demantoids are cut into diamonds. Sometimes gems are so small that they cannot be cut. Such grains can have a bright color and shine, so they are used without processing.

Low transparency gems are processed in special grinding machines. Such stones come in different sizes and colors, are low in cost, and are used to create beads. Large gems of green, red, brown shades are processed by hand, giving the shape of balls and faceted figures.

All shades of mineral

The stone has no mineralogical classification. The shades of uvarovite vary depending on its deposit:

  • Bright green stones, reminiscent of emerald, originate in Russia in the Urals.
  • Dark green minerals with a gray tint are mined in Scotland near Glen Skiagh. Hence the name of the mineral - skiagite.
  • Brown-green gems are found in Hanle, India. Such stones are called Hanleites.

Uvarovites are found with varying degrees of transparency. There are cloudy samples with inclusions of yellow tints. Stones also vary in shape. Most often it is diamond-shaped, less often rounded.

Interesting facts about uvarovite

There is a widespread opinion among mineralogists that Count Uvarov did not deserve to have this gem named after him. In general, the count’s personality is quite ambiguous: Pushkin wrote caustic epigrams about him, and left a rather unflattering description of Uvarov. The minister was allegedly caught stealing government firewood and increased control measures over universities and gymnasiums. In Russia, uvarovite is often called the “imperial stone”, as it was very loved and appreciated by Empress Catherine the Great.

Where is uvarovite used?

For industry, uvarovite has no value, but in jewelry it is in great demand. Skilled craftsmen make all kinds of decorations and interior items from it.

The first products appeared in Tsarist Russia. They were made to order for Catherine II. Since the main deposit was located in this country, she could afford the luxury of green gems without damaging the state treasury.

Earrings, necklaces and rings with uvarovite were highly appreciated by foreign guests. They nicknamed the gem Catherine, or Ural emerald, because of the similarity of these two minerals in color.

Green crystals are used to make beautiful cabochons. The stone is not cut, but only its irregularities are smoothed out to obtain a round shape. Thus, smooth spheres with a shiny surface are obtained. Uvarovite cabochons are valued no less than opals, and sometimes even diamonds.

Uvarovite is also used in interior decoration. It looks impressive on walls and kitchen countertops. In addition, boxes, lamp stands and other decorative elements are made from it. The presence of a Ural emerald in the house speaks of the wealth and good taste of its owner.

Each of the resulting jewelry is exclusive, with a unique shape.

  3. The size of uvarovite crystals in brushes does not exceed 2–3 mm. Excessively large pebbles should alert you.

Stories about Count Uvarov, state firewood and Prince Dunduk

Those who have read Kuprin’s story “The Garnet Bracelet” are already wondering, based on the description of the jewelry, whether there was some varnish in that bracelet. No, there were demantoid cabochons.

Let's talk about the name. There are many cases where stones are named after the name of the person who found them. Or just some person. This is our case.

Count Uvarov had nothing to do with the discovery of the stone. Uvarovite was first found at the Bisertsky mine (Urals), described by the mineralogist G. Hess, who named the gem in honor of the then president of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

It is unknown what Hess received from the grateful Count Hess for such a gift.

Nowadays, many mineralogists, who are interested in the history of Russia, believe that Uvarov did not deserve such an honor. He is remembered for Pushkin’s evil epigrams.

The count stole government firewood and “tightened the screws” in the management of education.

And the story about inheritance looks absolutely disgusting. The count's wife was the cousin of Sheremetev, one of the richest men in Russia. When Sheremetev became seriously ill, the prudent Uvarov considered himself the only heir of the patient. And he sealed with his personal seal the property of Sheremetev, who was still alive, so that other possible heirs would not steal it. But the patient recovered, and in high society they were indignant at Uvarov’s vile act for a long time.

By the way, Pushkin wrote a poem about this: “For the recovery of Lucullus.” The poems instantly scattered in high society. Who do you think is left to blame in this dirty story with the inheritance - Pushkin. The emperor reprimanded him. It’s true that a raven will not peck out a crow’s eye...

We will not talk about the too tender relationship between Uvarov and Prince Dondukov-Korsakov. Pushkin said this in a scathing epigram:

“Prince Dunduk sits at the Academy of Sciences. They say such an honor does not befit Dunduk; Why is he sitting? Because well... there is.”

Why such an evil epigram? The prince was an ignorant and limited man. His dear friend Uvarov appointed him to the post of vice-president of the Academy of Sciences. The appointment caused indignation among the enlightened people of Russia.

So think about whether Uvarovit is offended by his name...
