How to make a talisman magical
In order to endow the motanka with all the properties necessary for a talisman, it is necessary to charge it with the correct energy at the moment of creation. First of all, you need to clearly know your purpose for which the talisman is being made, for example, to protect against the evil eye, help cure an illness, protect the family hearth, etc. It's better to let it be one task. Confused thoughts will not lead to effective results.
Each amulet has its own phase of the moon
- The amulet for the family hearth should be made during the full moon,
- for a quick recovery - on the waning moon,
- for a successful harvest - on the growing one.
Important: choose the right colors
- shades of green and gold - will attract wealth, prosperity and health;
- shades of red - will bring happiness and love to the family;
- blue and its shades - help to achieve career success, adds self-confidence;
- white color is a symbol of purification, healing, the beginning of a new path;
- black – helps get rid of illness, damage, evil eye, failure.
Decorating a motanka doll
As a rule, rag dolls-amulets are decorated with ancient symbols, symbolizing the properties of the talisman. Initially, embroidery on aprons, shirts or scarves served as such decoration. As a rule, there was more than one symbol. The craftswomen created a whole combination of strong signs, of which even the smallest curl carried its own secret meaning. At the same time, the approach to the color of the threads was very selective, because each range is filled with special symbolism.
You can enhance the power of the amulet if you make embroidery on the doll’s robe, symbolizing at least one of the following signs:
Rhombus - attracts wealth and provides prosperity; Cornflower - helps to recover from eye diseases; Oak leaves - increase bodily and spiritual endurance (more applicable to males); Fiery spinning cross - protects from the evil eye, evil spirits and selfish thoughts of envious people; Hops - protects against illness and colds.
Reeling Rules
In creating a doll-motanka, every movement is filled with a special magical meaning.
- It is better to swing the doll on your lap rather than on the table.
- You can only wind the thread in the direction of the sun's movement. Each turn is performed in a spiral. This spiral movement personifies rebirth and growth, symbolizes a vortex of positive energy with which the amulet is charged.
- It is recommended to make an odd number of thread windings.
- The longer the thread, the stronger the reel doll will be. You cannot break or trim the thread during the manufacturing process; prepare a thread of a certain length in advance for the entire period of work.
- There should be only one node in the navel area, as a symbol of the beginning of a new life. When tying a knot, say your wish.
How to speak a talisman
After creating a doll, you need to name it correctly. To do this, light a candle, place the doll on the table and say: “I name you the Motanka doll.”
Next, you can read the plot:
“I urge you to become my faithful protector and helper in this world, between worlds and in all worlds.”
The conspiracy can be replaced with your own words, the main thing is to clearly formulate and speak out all your wishes and requests to the amulet.
How to use it correctly
- If you are making your first protective doll, it is better to keep it for yourself. You cannot give your doll to anyone.
- If the doll is made as a gift, then according to the old tradition, the person who accepts the amulet should also give you something in return, for example, a coin.
- When the doll is ready, you need to help find its place. Left alone, place the doll in your palm and ask her a question, where does she want to settle? Close your eyes and the first thing that comes to mind, a car, a bedroom, a window, a bag, etc., is the place that the doll has chosen.
- Make sure that the doll does not fall and try to handle it very carefully.
- You can give her gifts in the form of candies, coins
- Talk to your assistant more often, and don’t forget to thank her for her help.
How to properly part with a doll
- If the doll is worn out, torn or dirty, this means that it took the blow on itself. The right thing to do would be to get rid of it, surrender it to the elements (burn it, bury it in the ground, float it down the river). At the same time, you should read the “Our Father” prayer and thank the doll for its help.
- Never burn amulets at home, try to choose a forest, field, deserted places for this, open to the cleansing elements of the wind.
- Dolls cannot be washed.
- Can't be thrown away.
- If the doll is lost or stolen, then mentally release it, saying: “Thank you for your service. Go in peace!”
Meaning
Importance for the home - positive changes in any area (strengthening relationships, establishing mutual understanding with a son or daughter, saving a marriage)
Brownies love attention and warmth: with them, guests stay for a long time, and children and pets stop getting sick
REFERENCE! You can only accept Domovenka as a gift from those people who sincerely wish you well.
The brownie loves to misbehave and make fun of his owners, but he does not bring them harm. He has many responsibilities: cleaning, looking after pets and food supplies; protection from thieves and homeless spirits; maintaining trusting relationships between household members. In Rus', before buying cattle, Domovoy was asked for his opinion about the color. There was a point of view that it was necessary to purchase animals that were similar in color to the owner’s hair.
Doll amulet Brownie
The brownie can predict the future. Here are just a few signs associated with this:
- You can hear jumping in the attic at night - there is trouble.
- Howling, knocking doors and meowing - for worse.
- Before the fire, the house keeper drums on the window.
- If a good event or holiday is planned, the Brownie strokes the owner with warm paws and laughs.
- If he appears in the image of a specific person, he is soon destined to die.
If the spirit of the Brownie is an entity that cannot be subdued by a person, then the amulet figurine will be configured as the owner himself wishes
It is important to keep the talisman clean and never throw it into the “distant drawer”. Domovyats must stand in a visible place
Types of jewelry, materials of manufacture and their meaning
There are several options for the amulet: the facial expressions and emotions that Domovoi expresses vary greatly. The objects in his hands are also variable.
Doll amulet Brownie
- The house is a symbol of harmony in family relationships.
- Burlap embodies prosperity.
- Bast shoes are associated with a cozy atmosphere.
- The broom exorcises evil spirits.
- A spoon is responsible for well-being, and a coin is for wealth.
The choice of material for the figurine is not critical: both fabric and an old children’s toy will do; a charming handsome man is knitted or crocheted. Cotton wool, trimmings, and straw are used as padding. An excellent addition to the interior will be a Brownie made using the papier-mâché technique. You can also make a toy from clay or plasticine. Burlap is considered a symbolic material: it is very popular when making dolls with your own hands.
The image of a guardian spirit in folk beliefs
But first, a little about the appearance of the house keeper. The popular animated film about the brownie Kuzya introduced a funny, half-childish image of a domestic spirit into the consciousness of his compatriots. Although his friend, the brownie Nafanya, is much closer to how the Slavic ancestors imagined the brownie.
The appearance of the brownie differs depending on the region. In most of the territory of what is now Russia, the brownie traditionally looked like an elderly bearded man. They called him respectfully: Master. The house-elf also has other names: zhiharka, oppression, neighbor, golbeshnik, bro, etc.
It was believed that the household spirit was the embodiment of the ancestor of the clan, its founder. After the spread of Orthodoxy, another explanation appeared: men who died without repentance and, as punishment for this, were assigned to serve their relatives became house-elfs. Therefore, when moving to a new place of residence, it is customary to take the house spirit with you, so as not to leave the brownie to serve strangers.
The house spirit often appears to people under the guise of a copy of the owner (or, less commonly, the mistress) of the home. However, animal features are mixed into the human appearance of the brownie. These could be sharp ears, glowing eyes, or fur. The richer the house, the denser and longer the vegetation on the body of the house-elf. According to beliefs, in the male incarnation the brownie dressed in a scarlet or white shirt, a blue caftan, and in the cold season the house spirit wore a zipun.
This semi-human form is not the only one the brownie has. The house spirit can imitate other family members, and even animals. Most often, a brownie turns into a cat, less often into a snake, weasel, or rooster.
Manufacturing step by step: master class
Today there is an increased interest in the Slavic heritage, so in many souvenir shops you can buy protective dolls. But, according to traditional beliefs, a doll bought for money will not have any power - it can only be made independently or received as a gift from a loved one. To learn how to do it step by step with your own hands, carefully read the master class.
Preparation of materials
You will need fabrics and threads of various shades to make the doll’s body and its clothes. In the example presented, the pupa will be of medium size, about 20 centimeters. You can choose any other convenient size as you wish. List of required materials:
- a rectangular piece of light white or flesh-colored fabric 15 by 40 cm for making the doll’s body;
- a square piece of the same light fabric 25 by 25 cm for making hands;
- a square of bright (preferably red) fabric 15 by 15 cm for making a vest;
- two rectangular cuts 15 by 10 cm to shape the body;
- a rectangle measuring approximately 10 by 20 cm for making a skirt;
- a small piece of fabric for an apron (can be a different color);
- ribbon for belt and warrior;
- a red triangle approximately 20 cm on one side for making a scarf;
- cotton wool or cotton;
- red and white threads for fastening.
It is best to prepare the materials in advance; they should be clean and ironed. You cannot cut the fabric - if there are uneven edges, it is best to carefully tuck them in when twisting the parts.
Step-by-step instruction
First you need to clear the work area, carefully lay out all the materials and cover the table with a clean white or red cloth.
- First, the base is made: the material is rolled into a thick, dense roll and folded in half, making sure that it does not fall apart and can stand steadily.
- Next, the doll’s body is wrapped with red thread in the area of the future neck and knees. You can wrap it on top with another piece of light fabric.
- The arms are made from a second roller, which is placed horizontally, perpendicular to the body, under the neck and once again wrapped with thread at the bottom. The ends of the arms are secured with threads.
- After this, it is necessary to make the doll’s chest - to do this, wrap a piece of fabric in the appropriate place and wrap it crosswise with threads. Cotton or cotton wool is placed inside to give it shape.
- To make a vest, you need to carefully make a hole for the doll's head and put it on top - it will be held on by your outstretched arms.
- The next step is to make a skirt - for this, a piece of fabric is threaded with a “forward needle” stitch on a thick white thread, the body of the doll is placed inside and pulled together, carefully securing it at the back.
- The apron is attached with threads; you can carefully tuck it under the edge of the skirt to help it hold better.
- The red ribbon is divided into two parts - one is tied on the belt, the second on the head as a warrior.
- A scarf is tied to the doll's head, carefully securing its ends around the neck.
The doll is ready! At the end, you can add attributes to the traditional Beregin that will help her better take care of the house - usually a sewn bundle with cereals or aromatic herbs, small spikelets or flax.
How to activate the power of the Slavic goddess of the clan?
In order for the doll to begin to protect the home and family, it was necessary to charge it with special energy, to “revive it.”
- It is necessary, first of all, to talk with Bereginya, tell her about the family she came to, describe the household members, tell her about problems and troubles, joys and sorrows - in general, about everything that happens at home.
- Then the doll must be respectfully asked to come to the family and help with life’s difficulties, protect from evil spirits and any evil.
- Then, according to the Slavic rite, a candle or torch was lit and a spell was read with it, dedicated to Mokosh, the patroness of fertility, abundance and women's economy: “Empress, Makosh mother, heavenly mother, Mother of God. You are mother Rozhanitsa, sister of Svarog! Grant us good luck, no troubles and no crying! Give health to children great and small. Now and forever and from circle to circle! So be it, so be it, so be it!”
- After this, Bereginya was seated in her place of honor in the house or taken away with them.
It was impossible to take the doll out of the threshold or hand it over to someone else.
Bereginya is a traditional Slavic amulet. Nowadays, interest in such dolls is actively reviving, so everyone can make themselves a personal assistant who will protect their family in difficult times.
Brownie made of threads
To create a brownie from threads, you can involve a child. The method is simple, so you can have fun doing fun work with four hands.
To start making a brownie, you will need to prepare:
- floss or woolen threads;
- hot glue gun;
- burlap;
- a piece of twine or rigid thread;
- eyes and mouth can be cut out of thick cardboard, cut out from a photo card, or bought ready-made accessories in a store;
- decorations.
Let's start creating a brownie:
- Using multi-colored threads, we braid a thick braid 25-30 centimeters long.
- We make another tassel from twine, wrap the base with a “ball” - this will be the face, nose and beard of the brownie.
- We sew a brownie's hat from burlap.
- Glue the face onto the thread, decorate it with a hat, glue on the eyes and mouth
- Let's decorate.
Do-it-yourself motanka doll: master class
Take a piece of white fabric measuring 25-25 cm. Place cotton wool in the middle of the piece of fabric and form it into a ball - this will be the doll’s head. We gather the fabric around the cotton ball and secure it with thread, wrapping it tightly around the fabric.
We make a cross on the face. For this you will need thin ribbons of white and cherry flowers. First we take a white ribbon, wrap it around the head horizontally, then draw it vertically and tie it at the back of the head. We also tie a cherry ribbon over the white ribbon. It makes sense to take a cherry ribbon slightly narrower than the width of the white one.
As you can see in the photo, the ends of the ribbons go into the head winding - you can thread the ribbon under the existing winding, or you can wrap the ribbons with another piece of thread.
Our motanka has such a beautiful face. This design method is called the sacred cross.
We make hands for the doll. To do this, cut out two pieces of 15x15 cm from the same white fabric.
We twist each flap into a loose roller and secure it with thread, wrapping it around the edges, top and bottom, stepping back slightly from the edge of the roller.
We form the base of the doll. You will need a piece of fabric measuring 30x60 cm. Place a strip of cotton wool on it and roll the flap into a roller.
We wrap the roller tightly with thread along the entire length of the roller.
We straighten the piece of fabric below the head, insert the base column inside and wrap it tightly around the base. It turns out to be a torso with a head.
Then we wrap both handles with thread in the neck area.
We cut out the skirt. For it you will need a piece of linen fabric measuring 30x50 cm.
We place the fabric with the wrong side up in the “waist” area so that the skirt covers the face. With our hands we gather the edge into an accordion around the “waist” and wrap it with threads, as shown in the photo below.
We lower the skirt down - it is ready.
Let's make a shirt. For it, we cut a strip 6 cm wide, wrap it around the back of the neck and crosswise in front. We remove the remaining strips under the arms, laying the edge inward. We fix it with thread, wrapping it around the doll.
To visually separate the skirt and shirt, tie a colorful ribbon at the waist.
For the scarf, cut a triangular piece and tie it on the head, around the neck.
We fix it at the back with a knot.
Motanka doll - a do-it-yourself amulet
From time immemorial, people have been in search of special symbols and all kinds of amulets that helped protect them from filth and evil in the sublunary world. The pagan people believed that when creating certain objects, the gods endowed them with special powers, ensuring the protection of higher powers. A valuable amulet, made by human hands, could protect not only himself, but also his home, relatives and people close to him. Since ancient times and to this day, one of the most powerful talismans or amulets of the Slavic people is considered to be the Motanka doll.
In addition to its powerful protective properties, such a folk-style amulet, created with your own hands, is an important part of the folk culture of the Slavs.
What are amulets dolls and what is their function?
A small doll made of fabric, thread, straw or herbs, dressed in beautiful, embroidered clothes, was not intended for children's play. Only a woman could make a doll-amulet, as the continuer of the family and the keeper of the hearth; men were not allowed to do such a thing.
Craftswomen tried to create a doll without using sharp objects - scissors, knives or needles (needles were allowed when embroidering doll clothes)
Another important condition is that the doll should not have a face so that evil spirits do not enter it through the eyes.
Such amulets-dolls helped in difficult life situations; they can be roughly divided into several groups:
- guardians of the home and family hearth;
- guardians of the life and health of children and adults;
- guardians of pregnant women and babies, assistants in childbirth;
- bringing good luck, prosperity, wealth;
- patrons of crafts, trade, agricultural work, good harvests;
- guardians of warriors and travelers;
- protectors from evil spirits and evil spirits;
- dolls for fortune telling.

By the time she got married, the girl already knew how to make such amulets for various needs. The future bride also had in her dowry chest several dolls for her future home and new family. The experience of creating amulets dolls was passed down through the female line, from mother to daughter.

Russian national
Russian folk dolls are closely related to national traditions and rituals. Ritual dolls were prepared for certain holidays, after which they were destroyed or stored until the next holiday.
The following dolls were made from:
- fabrics;
- thread;
- wood;
- clay.
There are three main dolls:
- Kupavka - a doll was prepared on the day of the Summer Solstice from two poles fastened in the shape of a cross. Bunches of straw were tied onto poles to create a human-sized doll. The doll was dressed in real women's clothing - a shirt and sundress, with long ribbons tied to the sleeves. At the end of the Ivan Kupala holiday, Kupavka was released along the river.
- Kostroma (Maslenitsa) - the doll was prepared at the beginning of Maslenitsa week. Just like Kupavka, Kostroma was made human-sized or even larger, and dressed in women's clothing. Kostroma was burned on the last day of the Maslenitsa celebration.
- Easter (Verbnitsa) - the doll was prepared a week before Easter, on the eve of Palm Sunday. They tried to make the doll without scissors and needles from red scraps and rags. The finished doll was put up in the window for everyone to see, and on Easter it was placed on the table along with Easter cakes and colored eggs.

- The sacred object is placed in the center of the table, with 3 wax candles placed around it.
- There are several options for the conspiracy: reading ancient Slavic spell texts; conversion to the goddess Lada; expressing a request in your own words.
- The necessary condition is sincerity and faith.
- The spell for the Well-Being doll involves a call to bring prosperity, joy, wealth, and protection to the house. It is recommended to insert the words into the text: housewife, housewife, comfort, table, food, help.

Can a talisman cause harm?
In general, the house spirit is a peaceful, helpful creature. It sits quietly behind the stove if you don’t forget to feed it, and warns of misfortunes, illnesses, and natural disasters. But angering a brownie is not a difficult task. And then he begins to take revenge: he can hide things, change their places, throw off the bedspread from the sleeping person, break dishes, drop household items, tangle threads. And he can even send a stranger to the family, who will cause a lot of trouble.
Most often, a spirit can be angered by quarreling in the house or in the yard, or standing on a garbage heap, if a woman walks around with her hair untied or sleeps naked, if she works at night, if she forgets to have dinner, if she takes over a brownie’s house or puts some things there. You can save yourself from an angry spirit by hanging a mirror in your room. He will see his reflection, get scared and become quiet.
Attention, TODAY only!
April 1 is the brownie's birthday. Who would refuse a gift on their birthday? Especially if you have just woken up after a long winter hibernation. He stood up, stretched, and flew around to stretch his bones (he’s already so old!). Yes, yes, the brownie can fly! The force of gravity does not affect it.
April 1 is a special day for the brownie. He is waiting for gifts and funny jokes. Therefore, put on your clothes inside out, play gentle, harmless pranks on your friends and family, smile from ear to ear, and quickly run to make “houseworks.”
